Turmeric, the bright yellow spice used throughout Asia for centuries, has in recent decades been embraced by the West, not just for its ability to satisfy our appetite for curry, but for its impressive list of health benefits. For a single ingredient, turmeric packs a major health punch! The main compound in turmeric is called ‘curcumin’ and this is what makes turmeric so good for you, so here are 4 ways that turmeric can benefit your body.

1. Turmeric is a natural inflammatory

Inflammation is a key process in the body, it helps fight off nasty invaders, viruses and bacteria. The curcumin in turmeric has proven to show strong anti-inflammatory properties that block the action of inflammatory molecules, and has even shown positive effects on people with chronic diseases such as IBS and arthritis.

2. Increased antioxidant levels

Turmeric has been proven to play a key role in neutralising ‘free radicals’, which are highly reactive molecules that can react with fatty acids and thus causing damage to the body, all whilst boosting antioxidant levels! Clever right!?

3. Boosts brain hormone levels & improved brain function

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is the main growth hormone in the brain, and decreased levels of this hormone has been linked to brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and depression. This is where turmeric comes in… it can increase the levels of BDNF which may be effective in delaying or even reversing signs of brain disorders!

4. Lowered risk of heart disease

Curcumin has been linked to improving the function of endothelium, which is the lining of blood vessels and plays a part in regulating blood pressure and preventing blood clots. Also, inflammation is a key factor of heart disease, and as we have already mentioned, turmeric helps with that too!
